| Sabaidee Pee Mai- Lao New Year ends at Wat Lao Rattanamoungkhoun in Temecula, California. The last Lao New Year celebration comes to a close at the two day event on Saturday and Sunday, April 26th -April 27th, 2008. We would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and may this New Year bring your family good health and great wealth. Wat Lao Rattanamoungkhoun is a new temple in the making, with only a trailer and open land, but that does not put a damper in the Lao spirit. Lao people of all ages came together, along with the city officials and the local community to start a new tradition. This is the first year for the committee members to welcome all. The scorching heat wave did not stop the Lao people from enjoying themselves. As long as we had water, food, and live entertainment nothing can stop us from having a little fun and welcoming the New Year with a smile. Our tradition involves religious ceremonies in the morning- thuk baht, yaht nam, and baci; followed by Nang Sungkhan parade around the temple (Wat), and the cleansing of the Buddhist statues. Water plays a significant role in the Lao New Year festivities because it symbolizes purification and cleansing of the spirit to bring good health and good luck to everyone. Even though it is a first year for the wat, the committee members had outstanding entertainment for the crowd. They invited singers from Thailand- NingNong (Star Comedian-DaoTha-Lok) and Mam Phavady (famous for her single “Pee fao Hai”), Las Vegas-Phet Donxay (Known as the Lao Mike Piromporn), and singers from the San Diego, Orange, Riverside, and Los Angeles Counties. They also had a raffle drawing with grand prizes like a Mercedes 300 E, a Dell Laptop, 24K gold, and Apple IPod. To raise money for the wat, anyone can donate money by requesting a round of Lum Vong (a traditional dance in the Lao culture). The hot weather made it easy for everyone to enjoy a splash of nam mon-holy water from the monks or a bucket full of ice cold water down your back. With everyone having a super soaker or a bucket in their hand, you can be sure to get wet everywhere you walked. The two day event ended with a blast with the help and support from the Lao community.
